Lessons from Landcruisers
That Land Cruiser TV advert makes me smile. ‘Land Cruiser, driving us home”. I find myself expanding that statement with, ‘ where our hearts lie’.
On the left is ‘Our Landy’. You’ll notice that we are on the railway track. The track became the road at certain points.

Long before Land Cruiser, we had the Land Rovers which were the workhorses of virtually the world. Sturdy and reliable, tough enough to go anywhere. Wherever John & I were travelling in Europe first, then Africa, Land Rovers were there doing the hard yards.
And our Land Rover was driving us home, wherever our hearts lead us. Driving us to experience the impossible Auschwitz, driving us to drink tea with a small tribal group in the bush of Uganda who were quietly waiting for Idi Amin’s men to exterminate them, driving us to South Africa to experience apartheid.
In some parts of Africa we had ‘guests’ on the roof of our Landy. They were checking out our stores and supplies. John had securely stored all our equipment, but the visits to the Landy’s roof became quite often, especially through the Sahara desert region. More lessons from Landcruisers.
The awesome vastness of the Sahara meant that the Landy was our home. It was where we were sheltered from the weather, and it was a place of comfort – even though it wasn’t really that comfortable.
At times we found the Landy was helpful for others too! Our home, would also be used to tow other vehicles, like an old World War II jeep containing two rather boisterous men from New Zealand.
Our ‘Landy’ drove us to our next home, Durban, where our hearts settled for a time. Home. Wherever our hearts live.
